About Us
Walk. Learn. Discover
Y-Care Charitable Trust is an NGO that raises funds for other NGOs, Community Trusts, and Village Development Committees (VDCs) through sponsored walks in Botswana’s beautiful landscapes. Our flagship events are the Makgadikgadi Pans Walks.
These walks offer more than fundraising—they bring communities together, encourage healthy lifestyles, and give participants the chance to explore Botswana’s iconic natural sites.
By joining our walks, you not only support vital community projects but also experience adventure, learn about local cultures, and discover the power of collective impact.
Unique NGO
Many NGOs rely on sponsorships and funding for their activities, and Y-Care Charitable Trust does this—and more. Through the funds raised during our sponsored walks, most of the money is allocated to support other NGOs, Community Trusts, and Village Development Committees (VDCs). At the end of each year, we invite these organizations to submit sponsorship proposals for consideration.
Our trustees carefully assess all proposals and award grants to those that meet the set criteria. Beneficiaries address a variety of social needs, focusing primarily on youth, women, children, and other vulnerable groups, across areas such as arts, environmental conservation, health, and sports development.
Over the past 20 years, Y-Care has granted over 6 million pula to various charities and VDCs, helping create lasting impact across Botswana.
Through our walks and community initiatives, we also engage volunteers, participants, and sponsors, fostering a sense of shared purpose and collective action that strengthens communities while making a tangible difference in people’s lives.
Extraordinary sponsored walks
The business of Y-care is walks. We organise physically enduring and mentally demanding multi-day long walks in pristine areas of Botswana.
The Makgadikgadi day walk and the Makgadikgadi mid-night walk hosted annually being our main big walks.
The Makgadikgadi walks are physically gruelling because it is done in a pan which offers all kind of terrain and weather, from dry to wet, from dust to moist, from soil to rocks, from cool to hot, from sunrise to sunset. Besides it being physically demanding, it is also mentally taxing, as you have to cover distances of about 50km daily in a dessert, where your eyes can see up to the horizon with little life in the pan.
