Introduction

Experience the Makgadikgadi Pans in the night under the full moon AND during the day! Start and finish at Mosu village, at the south end edge of the Makgadikgadi Pans. Walking to and camp at Kubu Island, famous for its beauty, history and many baobab trees. Walking distance is 50 km for the night walk from Mosu to Kubu Island and 50 km for the night/day walk from Kubu Island back to Mosu.

Program

Friday: Departure 06.00 from Gaborone. Arrival to Mosu village at around 14.00. Enjoying light supper and the sunset over the Pans. After supper, the full moon will light up our path on the Pans for our 45 km walk to Kubu Island.

Saturday: In the morning around 5.00-6.00am, we reach Kubu Island where the camp has been set up and breakfast is served. Saturday is a relaxing/recovery day incl. sleeping, strolling round the island, museum guide tells us about the history of the island and how the area became the pans. Evening spent at the camp fire and to make us ready for start of the walking to Mosu at midnight. First half of the walk will be during the night (to avoid too much heat) and we will have our “Night Lunch” out on the pans and later will enjoy an amazing sun rise (Sunday morning).

Sunday: We walk during the morning and will arrive to Mosu at around 10.00-11.00am. Lunch will be served after we have got our feet soaked and enjoyed coffee/tea & muffins. Afternoon is with relaxing activities and option for a drive to some heritage sites in the neighbourhood. Dinner at campsite. Monday: Breakfast and transport back to Gaborone.

Practical Info

Walk: The walking routine is: walk 6 km, stop (refill water bottles, stretch, gather the group), walk 6 km, stop, walk 6 km etc. Paramedics will follow us during the walk. Quad bike support. Sponsorship Fee/Registration Fee: P4,500.00. To be paid no later than 30 days prior to the walk.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch package and supper. First meal: supper on Friday. Last meal: breakfast on Monday.

Register: Application Form and Indemnity Form filled in signed and returned to Y Care before walk. Forms can be downloaded from Y Care’s website or on by request to the office. Transport: Bus from Gaborone to/from walk. Cost P800/pers.
